In Mach Rider, it is possible to clear a level 20 km long in 54 seconds. Here's an example of such.
20 kilometers / 54 seconds = 0.37037037037kilometers per second.
0.37037037037 km/s x 3600 s/h = 1333.33333333 kilometers per hour
Mach 1 is 1234.8 kilometers per hour, so Mach Rider's name actually checks out. Who'd'a thunk.

In this video, Pannenkoek2012 explains that Mario's hitbox is 161 units tall, and that his running speed is 31.5 units per frame.
I'm sure we all know about that life-sized statue that's 155 cm/61 inches tall (why I used inches in this calculation and not centimeters will forever baffle me), so, let's find out how fast 31.5 speed really is.
For some dumb reason I went out of my way for my yield to be in miles per hour. Silly American me.

61 inches/161 units = .378882 inches/unit
Mario's speed: 31.5 units/(1/30)seconds
31.5 units(.37882 inches)/(1/30)seconds = 357.98 inches per second
357.98 inches per second = 20.34 miles per hour.
Nothing Usain Bolt hasn't surpassed, but then again, I doubt Usain Bolt can make sharp turns at that speed. Mario's diving and long jump speed are somewhere around 30 MPH, though.
