He decides who he wants to possess, and he possesses them. He only used it on regular Mickey and won't generally use it in character though.

Mickey has his robots and genius intellect but that’s not very new to Sonic considering he’s fought the Zetis and met all the other important characters up to Forces. Combine that with his weapon mastery, likely superior acrobatic skill, and other abilities like Chaos Control and it’s clear Sonic has this in the bag.
