Avatar Discussion Thread

One feat from the movie that I found notable. Spoilers, obviously. The airbender villain holds up half of a mountain with his bending, and later in the movie takes on the GAang. All of them are taken out, but not one-shotted. Katara lasts a few minutes against him.

The entire movie was a bit... meh to me. The animation is fiiiiire, the plot was mid (reminded me season 2 Korra for various reasons ), and the powerscaling was so so so so weird.

6/10, OG VAs would bump it up to 7.

It was weird. Aang's avatar state felt pretty weak compared to how it was portrayed in the finale of the og series, but then you have stuff like Tagah lifting a mountain and the rest of the cast fighting him.

"i have to say Aang with the staff was very underwhelming thought we'd see him whip up a tornado the size of a city but all he did was destroy a relatively small house with it

i mean its all the power of the spoiler so ya... BUT.. you can tell they didnt really use it how they couldve

It's pretty in character for Aang to hold back, especially when he's in the Avatar State. But the way that is executed still falls into CIS category.

Character Induced Stupidity. It's similar to PIS with a slight difference. PIS is basically happens because of pure lazy writing, where as CIS is like sort of in character in theory, but exaggerated in execution to the point of ultimately having the same effect in Battle Boarding.

Ah; I was aware of PIS but hadn't heard of the other.

Anyway, I want your opinion on something. At the climax, Tagah said that he has was powered up with the full power of the spirit world. Was that meant to be taken literally? Cause the Spirit World is an infinite-sized plane of existence.

I'm unsure, I do think the official size of Spirit World is more certainly cosmic, and it's implied to have its own flow of time at least when portals are closed off.
But in the case of Tagah, I'd lean towards the statement of his own power being limitless as hyperbole[/SPOILER]

I also saw this movie while exercising today, and thought that it was really good, with a great message, but feel sorry for the people who created it just to see it leaked far in advance. 🙏🙁

Not exactly. I use a crosstrainer for cardio and a gym machine for strength. 🙏

i feel the opposite movie has some unlimited power and full power of spirit realm statements but the final battle is so lackluster
The movie IS an interquel, so it's not like they could show vast destruction. Plus it would make no sense for Tagah to do that. That said, I do believe that statement isn't hyperbole, given that one of the previous avatars also uses it.

Thankfully there's two novelizations of the movie coming out later this year that should hopefully clarify some of the scaling stuff.

They coulda had Tagah destroy the universe and they'd still be able to fix it in time for Korra S1 to start. An interquel only guarantees the main cast's and the world's survival post-movie, it doesn't necessarily limit it's potential for feats.

Also, Aang getting one-shot by a mountain is some horrible writing for the power scaling of the verse when we had Kyoshi, an inferior Avatar, earthbend an island

bending usually doesn't scale to durability but I think I get what you mean.

Why would he do that, though?

I'll grant you that the whole mountain scene was weird, tho Aang did ragdoll Tagah around later when he was locked in. And Katara splitting the ocean apart is around mountain-level, if not higher.

This movie actually showed that it does, it took Aang physical strain to earthbend a tower. But yeah u get my point

I don't know. But the point is power levels aren't limited by chronology.

Katara's feat makes the mountain scene worse imo, and I truly doubt Aang would hold back for no reason when he's trying to escape a semi-natural disaster

Wasn't Kyoshi the strongest of all the avatars, or at least one of the strongest, due to living for hundreds of years and increasing her powers during that time, and mainly focusing on earthbending? 🙏

100% Mastered Avatar States basically add every power and ability of every previous Avatar to their own. Kyoshi is perhaps the strongest base form Avatar, but when it comes to Avatar State, it's pretty blatant that the most recent Avatar aka Korra is always the strongest by the end. Though people question of Korra might be the exception once those past lives all got destroyed by UnaVaatu. The tables were turned again during Korra's kaiju form and a resurrected Raava.

Really liked the movie, but imo it feels like a tie-in to a show that never aired. It’s like we skipped an Adult Aang series and went straight to the series finale movie.
Also that cloud splitting feat Aang and Tagah did has to be tier 6. Edit: After looking at it a bit more, its probably not even close to tier 6.

Whatever Kyoshi did, Aang can do too in his Avatar State cuz all the future Avatars inherit the previous ones’ strength and knowledge when using it

Ant, you should read the two Kyoshi novels. They're on par quality-wise with the original series.
