Berserk General Discussion Thread

I found out we’re getting back to back chapters over the next month biweekly. 385 is coming out this week, and 386 comes out in July

385 is out. Guts got
a megaboost, some of his feats seem Berserker Armor level. He breaks out of the stupa, without weapons, and shatters his shackles by flexing. Also, his sight fully returned in his remaining eye. His brand of sacrifice is visibly different now, but idk what that means.

The chapter being called "The Dawn of better fortune" makes it feel really hopeful.
Do you think we should have gotten more chapters of Guts in the stupa? It did take seven chapters for Casca's mind to be put back together after all?

The new chapter left me a little disappointed. Previously, Berserker's motive was a fight against fate. Now it turns out that it's not Guts's doing, but simply that he's the "chosen one."

Had you seen this yet?

That's exactly why I put the word 'chosen' in quotation marks. Overcoming fate is due to Guts' abnormal origin, not purely as a result of his iron will. This breaks the narrative
I’m going to disagree on this front. This isn’t mutually exclusive, the abnormal origin just means he’s not subject to the Idea of Evil, in the same way others are. If he didn’t have the iron willpower he would’ve died a while ago.

This is a just an explicit confirmation of what we knew already. Guts was clearly never normal, he was wielding adult sized weapons as a kid. This is what Skull Knight was talking about when compares Guts with a fish that can leap from causality. He’s always done this unconsciously. I don’t think it breaks the narrative, of struggling against fate, his opponent is the embodiment of it.

Yeah, he didn’t interact with the Beast of Darkness yet. I’m hoping they’re saving it for a big moment.

Edit: Just to give an example, to illustrate what I’m talking about. When Griffith wanted to take his own life, after becoming a raisin Fate/the IoE interceded on his behalf. If Guts had truly given up during his childhood or the Eclipse, he’d be dead.

Rather than breaking the narrative I am more so confounded by the execution of the power-up than the power-up itself. I feel like it could have been written to feel less like an asspull.

I think that’s fair. I interpreted it as using astral abilities like barytes alongside his physical strength, but I’m going to wait and see how it’s handled long term before I make any serious judgements. We still have another chapter soon

In 386 it will be revealed that Flora gave him the Baryte Axe that Schierke was gonna give him to fight the trolls, only for him to eat that thing on some Michel Lotito type shit

The axe was gnome infused, rather than with Barytes, who’ve only been mentioned, not shown. Besides Guts, up to now, the main party all has elemental associations. Puck is related to the sylphs and Serpico uses weapons infused with sylphs. Isidro has the salamander dagger. Witches like Schierke and Farnese have been shown using all the elements (except Barytes so far). If Guts has barytes technically they users of all five elements in the his Party now. Barytes control weight and can cause depressions & obsession, so he might’ve been using them all along.

This is completely speculative, and I doubt it’ll ever be explicitly confirmed or denied, but I have some theories about other Ideal deities like the Idea of Evil. The Four Elemental Kings are said to be the same as the Holy See’s Guardian Angels. But the Godhand are also associated with the Holy See, and they even have their own sefirot. If the Four Elemental Kings are counterparts to the Godhand, then I think there might be a benevolent counterpart to the Idea of Evil. This is even more baseless speculation than before but I think Void was probably the person who founded the current version of the Holy See that reveres the Godhand and Idea of Evil instead of the other angelic beings/deities

I assembled a few scans of foreshadowing for Guts' possible abilities. Also, I have some evidence for an upgrade, but even if it’s accepted it wouldn’t scale to most characters lol. Gedfring, one of the Gurus created a storm under with own power which is linked to how strong his magic is. So he and Flora should be around Low 7-B, but none of Apostles scale except maybe Ganishka, since he also uses magic.

Also, most of the magic users from Berserk would get a varies if I ever got around to making revisions since the power fueling a lot of their spells relies on the spirits, with a few exceptions.

It's one thing to fight fate with willpower and perseverance. It's another to be immune to fate's manipulations. Do you understand what I mean?
