Now this is nothing serious/bad, but I have noticed a lot of new users struggling to perform some functions in chat, so I am just propsing we make a little advice page for new or recurring members who sometimes get confused or don't know how to do something.

These tips are based on what myself or others have been asked by several times by multiple different users, new and recurring:

  • You can access chat by visiting the "Special:Chat" on the community, clicking the "Chat" option on the Wiki Navigation.
  • You can add emoticons by typing in the appropriate command in parenthaseses "()". This excludes regular emoticons. Our list of emoticons can be found here.
  • Linking works the same way it does in the source mode editor using brackets "[[ ]]". However this is only for VSBW links. You can alternatively just past the url in the chat box.
  • For links to other wikis, you can use the w:c function for example to link the page "Aang" from avatar wiki, use the command w:c:avatar:Aang and it will link the page to another wiki.
  • To use the "me" function (i.e. "Your Name is eating burgers) type /me in the chatbox followed by what you are doing.
  • For example: /me is eating burgers would appear as:
"YourName is eating burgers."

  • The command for italics and bold are insert here and insert here respectively.
If you like this idea, please add any additional tips you can think of! ^_^

I think this is a good idea.

Whenever I enter chat I'm greeted with some message that says something along the lines "Please make sure to follow our Chat Rules" and the Chat Rules page is linked to in that message.

Perhaps if a "Chat Advice" page is made that message can also link to the page if anyone knows how to do that.

I agree with Ryu. It'd be nice to have an advice page referenced in the chat greeting so new users can easily get used to using the chat. We can all give our advice tips and tricks and make collaborative page for it.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I agree, this is a pretty good idea. The chat markup code is also different from main wikia markup, which can confuse users, so documenting that would be useful.

I do not mind this suggestion, but you would have to ask Kavpeny for modifying the chat script to link to the instruction page.

Mm hm. This will also be easier to link than linking the Help:Chat page from Community Central which is what I would normally do.

There should be a page in the official Wikia in regards to some of the chat functions that can be used, such as modifying color text and stuff.

@Lina I know. It's the Help:Chat page. But linking a page from our own wiki is easier than linking a page from another wiki.

Well, if you wish to write a chat instruction page, feel free to do so.

You can tell me when you are done, so I can lock it, and link to it at the top of the chat rules page.

Kavpeny might be willing to modify the chat script to feature it later.

Okay I am doing so now.
