Fear Hax Layers & the Issue With Them

Got permission from King Tempest.

Alright so everyone knows what Fear Manipulation is. Character A has something scary or fearful about them, commonly attributed to aura or mere existence, and Character B gets scared and can't move or they become physically affected like pain, fainting, dying or something else.

It's commonly argued where in a verse this scenario plays out across several to dozens of different characters. One character is stronger than the other within the verse's setting such as a level 1 being fear haxxed by a level 4. The characters will have a generic quote about being on a different level and thus people add layers from that and so. I won't give examples since every verse in the last decade or so has some scaling for it and follows the "special trait X" or "they're on another level!" idea.

  • One issue is that fear hax is often associated with other abilities/traits. What looks like fear hax is regularly just supernatural intimidation aka Social Influencing. Others include Mind Manipulation, soul presence/pressure or some other. One character may fear another due to some primal instincts, another may fear a character due to their souls ominous aura. There are also characters in which they are so plain that that alone is scary itself.

  • Masking these under fear hax and then trying to scale them as a hierarchy creates false equivalencies between different concepts. A verse will mechanize the character's willpower, say the type of being they are, or the amount of energy they have grants them resistance. Without proper differentiation, we've created a scaling system that treats multiple unrelated mechanisms as equivalent simply because they produce similar effects.
So new guidelines:
  1. Fear hax is often just Social Influencing within verses. That is fear caused solely by overwhelming power, killing intent, or statements like “he’s on another level” do not suffice. A distinct mechanism must be present.
  2. The mechanism behind the fear is the layer category. Whether it’s soul-based, Mind Manipulation, supernatural energy, primal instinct, etc. For example, fear hax in Bleach is soul-based.
  3. Which resistance was bypassed. This is crucial in labeling as there are different paths to induce fear and thus one character might have 4 layers in soul based fear hax, another might have it through primal instincts or supernatural intimidation.
  4. Whether that resistance is actually comparable. In essence, do not assume layers in one category, apply to other categories (e.g, primal instincts ≠ spiritually induced fear ≠ Mind Manipulation based fear hax)
I think its best if I clarify now, basic supernatural source fear hax is not being removed. Instead, it should be treated similarly to Social Influencing, since that is effectively how it works in many verses. It stays with its layers on pages but have no real effect on say someone who resist soul based fear hax or primal instincts. Not a hierarchy but just a baseline for what is supernatural.

I think this is fine. Fear Inducement through simply being very known and strong, or because you give off some ominous aura/energy, is more so dependent on potency rather than layers. I'm even doubtful if this type should qualify for layers.

But I do like the idea of differentiating the layers (if present) based on how the fear hax is induced. I agree with the proposals largely.
