Gorilla vs. Lion

King Kong takes on the King of the Jungle.

Who comes out on top?

Assume an eastern male gorilla vs. a male african lion.

Male eastern gorillas typically weigh around 309 - 453 pounds, while male lions weigh 342 - 426 pounds, so they can reach comparable size. The lion is the more agile of the two, and his teeth and claws could deal much more damage in a moment than the gorilla's canines and arms. I think the lion could win more often than not.

The gorilla has the definite strength advantage. Gorillas are extremely powerful animals, and they casually do things that animals their size should not be able to and make it look easy. It is relatively common in gorilla groups for female mountain gorillas to discipline young gorillas by pulling down nearby trees and letting them fall close to the young in order to establish a silent environment in the group. In one such case where it was recorded, one of the mother females effortlessly pulled down and pretty much tossed a 8ft palm tree into the ground, with almost no momentum on her side to aid in the pulling. Needless to say, a dominant eastern gorilla fighting to protect its troop at the cost of its life would represent a much superior force compared to a relaxed mother mountain gorilla one third of its size disciplining young.

Additionally, the gorilla's bite force is over twice as powerful as that of the lion. Considering gorillas fight using their teeth as their primary weapon, yeah, if those teeth get anywhere near the lion's neck you can consider it done for - and a lion would have nowhere near the power required to escape a grip from a serious eastern silverback under an adrenaline surge.
