My personal vote is on the gray wolf. A common misconception of the gray wolf is that it bites with a force of 400 PSI, this is incorrect and actually comes from this video, where we see the wolf give only a mild warning bite. Wolves bite forces can go from 1000 PSI to 1200 PSI. Puma have a 400 PSI bite force. Puma weigh about 20 KG more then gray wolves and have claws but when when you take into account the fact the cougar hasn't eaten in 2 days and the starting distance is 5 meters the weight advantage and speed advantage is more close too even with Cougars edging out, however mountain lion teeth are only about 2 cm long while wolf teeth are about 6 cm long. Wolves having a larger fur coat are more likely to tank a strike or bite from a cougar (with about 6.3 cm thick coats) a cougar is likely going to have a tough time getting to the skin without coming in close which would result in a retreat by the wolf or a bite from the wolf, and seeing as a wolf has a bite force of over 1000 PSI and 6 cm long teeth one bite would get the cougar in critical condition, while it would take a much higher amount of strikes with its claws to kill a wolf as its claws aren't big enough to severely hurt a wolf in one or two or even 3 swings (with 2.5 cm long claws it would likely do damage but not anywhere near enough to kill a wolf).
