Pain scales to around 5.68 gigatons normally due to being on par with Sage Mode Naruto and being able to block his Rasenshuriken. His Chibaku Tensei is calc'd at 46 gigatons

Laxus scales above Jura who's 144 gigatons

Nagato basically can't do anything unless he uses Human Path off the bat, since Laxus either resists or has means around everything else
except Laxus just 1 shots with any of his AOE due to his x25 AP advantage

What stops Pain from just using shunshin + soul steal? Or catching him off guard with bansho tenin + soul steal?
Pain as much as touching him paralyzes him.

Plus Pain has an INSANE numbers advantage with summonings. I think yall are really focusing on the wrong things here

Nagato doesn't really use Human Path or Naraka Path off the bat against someone comparable to or stronger than him. He uses it primarily to gain information, as he can read people's minds.

Not to mention, he doesn't really use it in battle too often. Against Sage Mode Naruto, the Human Path got bodied basically immediately, while the Naraka path got bodied once Naruto actually focused his attention on it.

Considering how both Paths need physical contact in order to steal souls, and how often Laxus spams his unga bunga AOE lightning, it's very unlikely that Pain can just zoom next to him and yank his soul immediately. Meanwhile, Laxus can take out all 6 paths at once with a single attack since he's 25 times stronger. Pain would need prior knowledge and several distractions in order to actually land a soul steal, as none of his other paths can do anything.

Before you say that Nagato can just speedblitz with Shunshin, or drag Laxus forcefully with Bansho Tenin, the former isn't in character at all plus Laxus's Lightning Body is also a significant speed boost PLUS gives him Logia-level elemental ingangibility (although it's equally out of character), and Bansho Tenin-ing Laxus closer to him just means that Laxus blasts everything to smithereens easier.

Not to mention, with all 6 bodies active, his AP can lower down to 7B if Nagato himself is too far away to control

Laxus is simply too strong for Pain to actually accomplish anything of value

Except Laxus 1 shots them all before he even gets to this point. It's very in character for him to just aoe a bunch of fodder, as literally every fairy tail character does

Laxus has resistance to Absorption due to upscaling from Anima so that wouldn't work. Not to mention, Laxus 1 shots those animals too. Like wtf are they even gonna do

Except once again, Laxus just 1 shots AOE off the bat. The strategies you are suggesting require preparation time and prior knowledge to ever be viable options, and even then it doesn't work simply because Laxus is way way way too strong.

Also, the Naraka Path can't revive itself, so if Laxus kills it (which he can do easily as the Naraka Path itself doesn't do shit besides summoning the King of Hell), Nagato's cooked
