Doom says Torch going supernova would instantly kill half of the population of one hemisphere of the Earth:
Assuming even population distribution (all I can do), surface area of Earth = 510,072,000 km^2. Surface area of one hemisphere = 255,036,000 km^2.
Aiming for air blast (near total fatalities). However, I think I can justify using 60% of the hemisphere, since we're talking near total fatalities, but Doom said for half (50%) it would be total.
60% of the surface area of one hemisphere = 153,021,600 km^2.
Area of a circle = pi * r^2
Radius = 6979.13233 km.
Closest value I could get on the nuke calculator gives 21.045 petatons.
