Deltarune: Chapter 5 (SPOILER!!) Discussion Thread

(I post this in general discussion, yeah I don't see this thread)

Normal Route

Weird Route

Sooo, do we conclude sans Undertale and Deltarune is the same 🤔, it's just a small hint tbh [/SPOILER]

Ralsei no longer turns into a hat when he's DOWN (I believe as of the Flowery fight), he instead looks extremely pissed off and kneels

Well, it's not "not real" in this sense, the Darkners are still actual, real people, essentially.
They most certainly are not. They are manifestations of fantasy, nothing more, nothing less. You could use some argument of them being real like, "I think therefore I exist", but that's semantics

Oh hey, the thing that I put in a comprehensive CRT about dark worlds being dream-based and imagination-based is vindicated, who would've thought?

Yeah. That's what I meant. I don't care about powerscaling when it comes to if someone is a real person or not. Darkners consciousnesses are on the same level as a Lightner's.
That's why I used OMORI as an example: the "characters" in Headspace are unfeeling puppets controlled by Sunny's subconscious that aren't "real people" in any capacity. This is un-so with Darkners.

That's Flowery talking about how without Asgore to take care of them in the Light World, they'd wither and die so I don't think it's the best proof.

But like it's all semantics, Ralsei is as much of a person as Susie and Kris are.
This is not the screenshot you think it is, plus, this is before Asgore got kidnapped.

Also, yeah. Sure. I'm just claiming he's a part of a fantastic world where rules can be fantasized.

Just finished chapter 5, and holy that ending was PEAK!!!!
I am so sorry for doubting you Flowery!

I just came back from Chapter 5, I'm gonna rearead everything in here rq and give my thoughts, though I haven't completed it yet and still need to go back and find the secret boss which I seem to have absolutely missed. I've played the Weird Route (WHICH HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT) and the main route.

I haven't seen anyone bring this up before. There's no arguing about this. It's literally JUST Gaster
Absolutely.

The official DR website existed back shortly after Undertale was released, and had text directly from Entry Number Seventeen (found in a room in the game which is literally labeled room_gaster), it said "THIS NEXT EXPERIMENT, WILL BE VERY, VERY, INTERESTING."

Combined with other likely-Gaster text, fans largely believe he created Deltarune, it was the experiment he was talking about way back then.

Honestly, one disappointment I had with the Chapter was the Asgore treatment. And this isn't even about him not getting a boss fight or anything, because that clearly would've made zero sense with the story Toby was trying to tell, but man did he feel like an afterthought.

The whole mystery around what exactly ruined his life is still basically left untouched.
Like maybe it's being saved that for a future Chapter, but it def made it hard for me to care when the only new information we really got is that he knew about Dark Worlds.

Another thing is how weirdly fast his character shift felt. He goes from being pretty carefree with Flowery at the start, and like sure he was putting on an act, but the jump from that to being outright hostile toward Kris and co, and then toward the Flowers, felt way too sudden for something that was supposed to be a gradual buildup.
So after the Flowery fight when he runs toward Kris and goes "I understand now that what I did was wrong." It just felt... kinda unsatisfying? Nothing particularly huge happened to make him change his mind. He just kinda does and we're expected to roll with it. I dunno, it just didn't land for me.

Also he's a ******* BUM. "I will kill the Knight and drag its corpse through the Town" and then when the Knight actually shows up he does absolutely NOTHING.
He just stood there! Asgore man why are you so ass
I totally felt the same way. I knew he'd at least be in the chapter, but I absolutely expected him to just do...more? Like he was there, he contributed to the story and had interaction, but he wasn't really relevant to the gameplay at all. He was just kinda around, had a mini-character arc where it felt like half of it was off-screened, we didn't actually learn almost anything about his motivations compared to what we already knew, and he literally just sat there and did nothing as the Knight captured him. To be fair, like Flowery, Asgore had no idea what he was preparing to fight against, but we couldn't give the former police chief and the guy who was, in the previous game, the King of Monster's, even a tiny bit of action? He looked pathetic there. Not like I expected that much, but he was such a pushover it was hard to believe.

Alright I'm caught up on most stuff.

I still need to see the Secret Boss and I'll just wait for other people to figure out the forgor tree guy and other secret stuff but for now yeah this chapter is like a 10 for me.

Anyone avoiding Weird Route spoilers, I'll be leaving them at the end so you can read my other thoughts first if you want.

This was absolutely the Ralsei chapter, as I honestly expected since the truth is Ralsei has had barely any attention in the game in terms of just his character. He finally grew a lot and now we understand a tiny bit more about his mystery, turns out he's actually probably strong as shit and holds back for some hidden motive. His existence is implied to be some sort of anomaly as well. I loved all of his interactions with Flowery and can't wait to go back and see more interactions I didn't select.

Same for the flower characters, I didn't get any of their hang outs besides Aqua because I'm a monster😭 All of them were pretty unique, interesting, and likeable. Also my name is Seth so I have a bias for the Perseverance Flower, my goat.

Flowery was actually a pretty neat character, I did expect him to just be a manipulative twist villain, so I was pleasantly surprised to see his character develop and understand his motivations better. His boss fight was great albeit a bit easier than I expected. The way he legit tried to square up with the Knight was sick as hell. I do like that Toby played into the anime vibes but not too heavily.

The new mechanics were genuinely incredible, kind of mind-blowing too. I never expected DR to take such a heavy shift, yet it fit so well.

Humor was top-notch too, and the music, as always, was amazing. I think my favorite new theme was the Asgore remix that played when he spoke sometimes.

Also, as I said in a different comment, I am legitimately rather disappointed in Asgore's role here. I'm not gonna rag on Toby for not making him a boss fight or anything, because now that we have context, that would have been illogical in the story. He just didn't have enough of a presence for me to feel satisfied at all with how his character was treated.

Weird Route Stuff.

WEIRD ROUTE IS INSANE. I actually did this before the main route and wow...I never could've expected it to go that way.

So it looks like when we do get to play the WR, it's legit gonna skip 5 and 6 outright and jump straight into whatever Chapter 7 will be. The way it literally disregarded the entire rest of CH. 5 was jarring, and confirms finally that the Weird Route is legitimately an entirely separate identity in the game, more than I was certain of before. Noelle's absolute breakdown was genuinely a bit breathtaking, the entire lake sequence was perfectly done. It's absolutely ramped up my excitement for Ch. 7 to the maximum.

Also.

Sans is totally the same between games. He literally had Susie draw a picture of her, Noelle, and Kris. So now I'm predicting he keeps that photo and somehow escapes to the Undertale world for some reason, maybe because of the Roaring.

And is it just me or did Toby make the characters swear a lot more? I think he's truly embracing his fanbase atp 😭

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOW DID I NOT REALIZE THIS???

SEPTEMBER 15TH 199X.

THE RELEASE DATE OF UNDERTALE.

DELTARUNE TAKES PLACE IN WHAT YEAR AGAIN??

The main Flowery boss fight is so tough, yet when he fuses with the other flowers to become Omega Flowery he’s a complete joke. Bro forgot he could do literally anything else but charge forward. I get it’s supposed to be more of a victory lap for the fight, but it feels weird for a fusion of all the flowers + an Omega Flowey reference to go down so easily compared to the base form.

One thing I’m wondering about is how many different variations of the weird route there’ll be. If you choose to not click proceed when the screen first starts going white, the game will cut to the normal route scenes with Susie alongside narration of Noelle saying “nothing’s changed”, and presumably you can play the whole chapter normally from there (I haven’t tried it yet lol, for one specific reason).

The interesting thing about this is that not only did the weird route abort sound not play, but there’s also realistically no way the stuff in chapters 2 and 4 won’t play an effect on Noelle later on. I also doubt they’d have the really weird sound in the chapter 4 screen if you could completely come back from it after that point. Those makes me think there might be some pseudo-weird route with similar vibes to an aborted Geno route in UT, or maybe even an entirely unique extra route.

It gets extra interesting since back in chapter 2 there’s a way to abort the route after getting the Thorn Ring, allowing you to keep it in what’s otherwise a normal playthrough of the game aside from the middle of Chapter 2 (important due to the existence of the Twisted Sword). That nets potentially three versions of the Weird route alone.

Once I considered it, of course it would be her.

WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL IS THIS BOSS FIGHT BTW LMFAO????

Yeah that makes sense, good points. I didn't try that before actually but I agree, it has to have an effect later.

So, we've got some interesting stuff in this chapter, most notably the fact that the whole mechanic aspect is actually being addressed.

Ralsei states that we normally perceive these mechanics (or layers) through the subconscious. That's a pretty interesting detail, because it suggests that the separation between FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, SPARE, and DEFENSE may not actually exist in a conventional sense within the setting itself.

Instead, it seems more like the characters are simply thinking (during those turn), while what we perceive as a turn-based sequence is just the subconscious processing those actions. The reason we see it as distinct "phases" could be because we're observing that subconscious layer rather than the events as they occur in real time.

In other words, the subconscious appears to function as the basis for the turn-based mechanic. The turns themselves may not be literal pauses in reality, but rather a representation of thought and decision-making being translated into gameplay.
