How/Why is Mario 3 used for the profiles?

Since Mario 3 was confirmed to be a mere play/performance, would we still be able to use it for the profiles despite this?
Or should the claim be taken with a grain of salt?

It's actually a mixed statement. Miyamoto is pretty consistent in saying the Mario cast is a troupe of actors, but it's not consistent in what he means by that. It is more so a fancy way of saying that it has a floating continuity where all the games are canon to one another but there is not set sequence. Most story focused Mario games are commonly thought to be stage plays where as the sports and party spinoffs are the cast on vacation. Although, the feats are still real as it's implied they still use literal and practical effects as opposed to digital effects. They still consistently demonstrate superhuman acrobats or pick up giant boulders.

But the comparison he makes is that each Mario game is like an episode of Popeye where Mario can be a doctor in one game but an athlete in another. Similar to how Popeye and Bluto/Brutas are a Navy man and pirate respectively in one episode but just pair of salesman coworkers the next. And it's implied numerous episodes are canon to other episodes but the chronology of those episodes are out of order.

Unsure about that actually. Same can be asked for Fire Mario beating Bowser in the 2D Games in a couple hits.
