As years have gone by, Imgur has become more and more unreliable. As of recent after doing tests with other users across different regions, we came to the conclusion that Imgur has disabled the option of uploading video recordings/MP4 files as posts. Luckily, older posts of this type have not been deleted. Imgur has also become completely unusable in the UK & some Asian countries. As some of you already know, Imgchest is a site similar to Imgur without these problems. But be warned: Imgchest is more lenient than Imgur when it comes to suggestive posts.

Edit 1: Imgur has occasionally privated old MP4 posts with Japanese audio for the last few months without warnings too.

Edit 2: Some alternative sites that could be used for posting scans are IMGBB, POSTIMG, CATBOX, JUMPSHARE, ARCHIVE.LI & GYAZO.

Do you mean "less lenient"?

In any case, the safest place for uploads would be directly to the wiki, but given how anal they are about anything bigger than 10 MB, that'll be a big ask.

Hell we can't even keep scans on YouTube safe. Even with references it won't mean much without video proof to show for it.

I don't think this is a permanent issue. Their status website indicates that there's some issues with uploading. That's presumably what's been causing this for the last few days.

I seriously doubt that Imgur would make such a significant and permanent change to the types of files that can be uploaded, in such a shoddy way, without notifying anyone, while also saying that uploading has degraded performance.

As I recall, Imgur also failed to mention or notify their userbase when they decided to stop allowing the conversion of YouTube links into gifs several years back (another staple feature they had for years iirc). The fact they removed the ability to upload video recordings/screen recordings without notice as well is a bit troubling. Perhaps we may have to prepare for the worst in terms of Imgur's reliability.

EDIT: If it really is a temporary issue, then I just hope it gets resolved and Imgur users can move on from this.

If we replace Imgur, we need to find a very reliable and stable large replacement site that won't suddenly be shut down within a few years. 🙏

I've been hesitant about Imgchest for that reason, but I suppose at this point, it being six years old does make it seem like it will stay around for a while longer.

I think Catbox is a bit better in that regard, since it's ten years old, but that has its own geoblocking issues.

Speaking from experience, imgur doesn't allow uploading of anything in Asia, and trying to bypass it by vpn doesn't work either. I've uploaded my new shit into imgchest, which I have found to be as good as imgur. any video can be uploadable as long as it's 30 MB and whatnot.
Tho it'd be nice to see some alternatives. How's catbox in comparison?

200 MB file size limit, almost any file type, but it's blocked in Australia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

EDIT: Catbox account created lol

I live in Bangladesh and I've been able to use imgur with impunity for a while now, ignoring the short ban on it years ago (The government behind that ban was violently ousted in 2024 as you all know).

I can't use it anymore in India and I'm still barred from using it in Thailand

I have been saying this for so much time. As much as Imgur offers extremely user friendly upload services (albums, ordering, videos, comments etc), it is massively inconsistent accross regions in terms of services. My country does not allow upload at all.
I dunno how these other alternatives like catbox and imgchest are, but I would prefer if we can have something on wiki itself which can match perks of imgur as I mentioned above. No matter how much Klol may advocate wiki, it is completely barebones.

Their upload service is still degraded, yet it lists no incidents yesterday.

For a major website this kind of outage is usually at least elaborated on by now, typically fixed outright.

Didn't we already have multiple threads advocating to avoid Imgur and use other platforms such as Gyazo, Catbox, and Imgchest?
I believe we still have a rules page that suggests Imgur. We could reword that to include alternatives.

Ultimately, we're not in control of wiki features improving in that regard, and we likely don't have the budget to become a file hosting website as well.

Although, we can kind of replicate albums on the wiki, by creating a user page or blog post, and treating sections within that like albums. Embed the images on that page, with room for comments in-between them.

But with blog posts we are at the mercy of the user themselves, god forbid they decide to leave. Also the user pages could be prone to vandalism as those aren't as well guarded as the main profile pages.

Ultimately we do run that issue with albums on external websites as well. They are editable, but only by the original creator.

I had same issue a couple days ago, but I think it’s just some technical problem rather than new policy. Otherwise, Imgur would announce. So personally, I’ll just wait a bit. I have faith in Imgur.

Fair, but that was the point. I thought we already kind of agreed it should be updated. And that bumping an old thread as opposed to making a new one would have been an alternative to get the memo. Though, updating various pages would be the part that might take time and work.

I was still using Imgur because of sunk-cost fallacy (my current revisions being littered with it), but the recent outage has lead to me searching for other sites and considering Catbox gives me a 200 MB file size per upload..... yeah that's gonna be my main site now unless it somehow shoots me in the foot

I was gonna mention that albums were a bit annoying to create. idk if it was a bad memory, or if they updated it, but I've found it pretty smooth now. Here's a test album showing some images alongside a video and a long description.

Yeah the first thing I immediately tested was how albums work, how accessible it is to scroll through stuff, and if it was mobile friendly (I don't want half the comments on my revisions beind "dead link")

Seems to pass my standards all around with no significant issues

It doesnt help that the forum here doesnt allow for embeds of images from the wiki...

Or like, anywhere else but Imgur and a few other random places

Certain websites (like the wiki and Discord) have measures in place to prevent their images being embedded on other websites. For these ones, they initially have the images embed fine, but break them after a few days/weeks.

The forum doesn't have an allowlist for websites that images can be embedded from, it instead has a blocklist for some websites that don't play well.

Also, if we upload too many full page comicbook scans directly to our wiki, it might get deleted due to copyright complaints, so don't do so please. 🙏

I might make a twitter account dedicated to scans in that case.
