I mean as in where does the ability come from in the first place?

That ability comes from the Echo, a power that has many applications to it, but one of them is being able to both see where most of their opponent's attacks are going to strike, and to view a fight that they could possibly win, but end up losing to, as effectively a vision of an alternate future instead.
